UERJ Geophysical Society Student Chapter

     Between the 9th and 11th of October 2019, the 2nd edition of the Workshop on Applied Geophysics took place, this year with the theme of Machine Learning applied to Geophysics. The event included ten introductory lectures on Machine Learning and its applications to the exploration of hydrocarbons and mineral resources, in addition to a round table with the theme The future of Geophysics and the importance of Machine Learning. We also had two short courses, one on Machine Learning in Python and the other on Seequent's Oasis montaj software.

     Recognizing the importance of academic events for students, we received sponsorship from companies and institutions such as Emerson, Seequent, Brazilian Society of Geology - RJ / ES and the UERJ'sCenter for Technology and Sciences, in addition to support from the Brazilian Society of Geophysics-  SBGf and the Geological Survey of Brazil - CPRM, which donated books to be raffled off during the workshop.

     This year's theme was chosen due to the great increase in the importance of Artificial Intelligence, with emphasis on machine learning, in Geosciences in recent years. Several events on the theme were and will be organized in Brazil and in the world (revealing the importance of the theme), but with prices that are not accessible to undergraduate and graduate students, and even researchers. Our objective this year was to organize an event open to the public that would integrate students, researchers and industry professionals, enabling the exchange of information about what is currently being developed and applied in the market and in the academy in relation to machine learning.
